Saint Olav discussing with his followers

In this image I try to recreate how the interior of a viking king’s house looked. Various tapestries could have been hung from the roof and the walls, both for insulation and decoration.

The many textile artefacts from the Oseberg viking ship burial find provide the basis for the decorations. See more at: https://www.vikingtidsmuseet.no/english/research/gjellestad-ship/oseberg-ship/ and TexRec – Virtual Reconstruction, Interpretation and Preservation of the Textile Artefacts from the Oseberg Find – Museum of Cultural History

In addition I have used motives from some of the runestones from the Swedish island of Gotland: https://www.arild-hauge.com/PDF/Gotlandic_Picture_Stones_as_Sources_for.pdf

In Stockholm, Sweden, the open-air museum of Skansen showcases “the whole of Sweden with houses and farmsteads from every part of the country”. One of these, Oktorpsgården, contains an interior which preserves a “medieval” look, including woven textiles used for the reasons mentioned above. See more at: Oktorp Farmstead – Skansen
